The DaReVoStock Study

March 2020 the world is partly locked down due to a virus that spreads quickly – during that period I dove into 2 componist that inspired me a lot, although both individual have a own unique history – style and legacy, they have some thing in common.

DaReVoStock is a morphology of “Das Reich Von Stockhausen” a combination of the composers Karlheinz Stockhausen and Steve Reich names. DaReVoStock isn’t ment to put Stockhausen above Reich, it just sounds ok.

Reading their biographies distilled key words/phrases are “repetitive figures”, “slow rhythms, tape loops, “phasing patterns”, “controlled chance”, “transformers”, “generators”, “modulators”, “magneto-phones”, “abstract (synthetic) sound”, “noise”, etc. All these key words & phrases can be translated into the modular world of music creating several DaReVoStock parts (Steve Reich and Karlheinz Stochhausen where involved into electronic music).

Stephen Michael Reich (born October 3, 1936) is an American composer known for his contribution to the development of minimal music in the mid to late 1960. More on wikipedia.

Karlheinz Stockhausen (22 August 1928 – 5 December 2007) was a German composer, widely acknowledged by critics as one of the most important but also controversial composers of the 20th and early 21st centuries. More on wikipedia.

Cover DaRevoStock Part1 IrCl

Part1 IrCl” is a composition for modular set up where “rhythmic” parts are triggered by an irregular clock; these irregular triggers influence the interaction between the musician and the instruments creating unexpected chances.

– Recorded: April 11 2020
– Location: SONICriderStudio – Netherlands.
– Play time: 42:46
– Tempo master clock (ER-M multi clock): 46 (Largo)
– Used gear & patch info check “Part1 LrCl and Part2 ReCl set up”.

“Part1 IrCl” is recorded in one take based on a score that describes volume, dynamic, filtersetting, mutes, intension for each sound source (21 in total). Check “Part1 LrCl and Part2 ReCl set up”.

Irregular (clock) means that the used sequencers have a different (uneven) length (63, 62, 61, 15, 14) or the triggers patterns have non-repeating settings.

Cover DaRevoStock Part2 ReCl

Part2 ReCl” is a composition for modular set up where “rhythmic” parts are triggered by a regular clock; the composition is the same as used by “Part1 IrCl” due to the more constant flow the musician interacts more In balance way. “Part2 ErCl” therefore has a calm(er) atmosphere.

– Recorded: April 11 2020
– Location: SONICriderStudio – Netherlands.
– Play time: 43:32
– Tempo master clock (ER-M multi clock): 46 (Largo)
– Used gear & patch info check “Part1 LrCl and Part2 ReCl set up”.

“Part2 ReCl” is recorded in one take based on a score that describes volume, dynamic, filtersetting, mutes, intension for each sound source (21 in total). Check “Part1 LrCl and Part2 ReCl set up”.

Regular (clock) means that the used sequencers have a different but even length (62, 60, 58, 14, 12) or the triggers patterns have repeating settings.

For output info into recording set up see “audio routing”.

First draft of modular score.

Score info:

– The score is a paper version divided into a line for each sound source where for each stage of the composition “cryptical” description of the manually action is stated, using a number in the column stating the priority of handling.

Audio routing info:

– Each sound source (1 – 17) has a dedicated output connected to UAD Apollo 19-inch sound cards – where 15, 16 and 17 go via a Mackie submixer (FX TipTop Z-DSP “Reverb” and “Delay”).

Recording is done by taking the main output of the UAD set up. Level control during recording done manually by adjusting output levels of the individual VCA’s.

Mix/master info:

– Mixing: since the recording is in stereo, during the mixing stage fade in and out, and fx (UAD Lexicon 224 and Tape Echo) applied – using Softube Console 1 SSL 4000 emulation (a bit of compression using the channel strip compressor).
– Mastering using Softube Console 1 SSL 9000 emulation (a bit LP and HP applied) adding some channel strip drive.

The DaReVoStock study will be a continuing story…..

Have fun listening part 1 and 2.
